I understand that Net2phone Proprietary product Yap Jack / Yap Jack Plus can be used with a dial up connection and there is no need for a PC to operate. Is there a similar product available that could be used with any ISP?

Thanks in advance

You can try Innomedia's InfoTalk 7.

http://www.innomedia.com/products/internet_telephony.html

I think there are a couple others out there as well that work over dial-up.

P.S.  Zoom Telephonics (www.zoom.com) will soon have a DSL broadband modem with VoIP (SIP stack) built in.  You read it here first!

InfoTalk 7 requirement says : needs  Valid InnoSphere Account. That makes it I guess a Proprietary product to support Inno Sphere only. And it defeats my purpose at hand. My purpose to have freedom, not be bound to any specific provider. Any other thoughts ?

Do IP Phones require PC support or it can be used w/o PCs?

>>That makes it I guess a Proprietary product to support Inno Sphere only.

I thought you just wanted a dial-up Internet VoIP product.  This product does support that.  So if you use dialup AOL, Netcom, Mindspring, etc. you can use this product.

However, like you say, it does only work with their backbone network for dialing from the unit to the PSTN, so it is somewhat proprietary.

There is this product pasted below, however I believe it's not a standalone device - it requires the use of your PC's USB port.  If you want a standalone box that doesn't require the PC to be on, I'll have to do some more research.  Anyway, here's the product description:

The eDial Adapter developed by CallOnThe.Net (www.callonthe.net) is the very latest true single port residential H.323/SIP VoIP gateway analog telephone adapter (ATA). The eDial Adapter which is currently the lowest priced and smallest VoIP gateway on the world market retails for only $US 49 and supports both broadband connections and dialup connections with bandwidths as low as 19.2 kbps. The product requires no additional router equipment to be installed when compared to the installation requirements of other competing products greatly speeding up installation time and significantly reducing total installation costs.

January 3 2004--The eDial Adapter developed by CallOnThe.Net and its partners is the very latest true single port residential H.323/SIP VoIP gateway analog telephone adapter (ATA).

The eDial adapter has been commercially tested with Cisco, Quintum, Asterisk and other popular name brand and open source gateways, gatekeepers and proxy servers. It supports both incoming and outgoing calling and is designed to deliver a regular phone call experience - just pick up your telephone handset to place and receive calls as normal. You may also dial and call IP addresses directly from your phone. This will make PC to Phone calling obsolete.

The product has successfully passed operational compliance testing with numerous networks including CallOnThe.Net, Free World Dialup(FWD), Dialpad, IConnecthere, Addaline, IDialDirect, MyWebCalls, Go2Call, Totaltalk, Globalphone, WorldCall and many others.

eDial adapter may also be used with the GoAnywhere converter to provide remote extensions of local phone lines and local PBX lines. Callers will be able to access there account remotely for making low cost high quality calls, any phone anywhere. This application is frequently requested by telecommuters who want to extend their office phone to their home and expatriates who wish to extend their home phone line to another country where they are based.

Thanks Tom, THis is a great job, I appreciate your help. Yes I am looking for a standalone box that does not require a PC to be ON and does not require a PC to do initial setup. The second part (required PC to do initial setup) is not mandatory, but if there is a product like that!! I again appreciate your help. I am doing my resarch also, SO far I did not have any luck finding any such product. Today is a new day, I / you might  come across something interesting product..

i'm not coming up with any device that lets you set your ISP settings on the device and then uses the dial-up Internet settings for the IP connectivity AND uses either H.323 or SIP standards.

In 1998 we reviewed such a device that came close to what you want - but it wasn't H.323 or SIP-based.

It was called the Innomedia Infotalk.

Here's the review if interested, it did everything you want, except support a VoIP standard:

http://www.tmcnet.com/articles/ctimag/0498/review007.htm

Seems a bit strange that such a dial-up "ATA-186 like" product doesn't exist.  You would think it would.  A 56k modem should be able to handle decent voice quality at the higher compression algorithms.  My guess is that unless you sell a lot of these devices in "volume" that it isn't profitable, which is why it probably doesn't exist.

I'm guessing if I try my contacts at Innomedia they would know if such a product exists on the market  i'll keep you posted.

If I understand you correctly, you are saying that Net2phone detects your IP address as being from Kuwait and changes the price accordingly (most likely increases the price I assume).

There is no way around this that I am aware of other than to setup a proxy server in a remote country and route all your IP traffic through that remote proxy server.

What is nice about InteleFone VOIP phones is they work with broadband and dialup. People on my team use them in remote locations of Africa with only 24k connections. Most of the solutions I have seen for dialup have been software based instead of hardware based. Intelefone phones are third generation phones and have a physical  built-in compression microchip. The hardware compression makes a huge difference! It is like the differences between a software firewall and a hardware firewall.

What is best is InteleFone gives away a FREE VOIP phone to new customers! So why not test it out for yourself today! http://www.ClaimYourPhone.com
